Face brick: The outside of the modern Russian Stove can be constructed of various materials, from soapstone to tile. Any material that will transfer the heat from the flues to the outside air will work fine, and, depending on the craftsman and materials, it can be rendered into a most beautiful structure that will last for many years to come. Some materials work better than others, and concern should be given to what materials are available in your area. Special attention could be given to native stone found only in your location which can be gathered by yourself for a great unique look all your own. A good common red brick works fine and can usually be had in almost every area. Of course, there are many different colors of brick throughout the country that can be used. Keep in mind that it is best to use a brick with a lot of mass. Wider brick (around four inches) work best. Brick with holes in them should be filled with mortar to make them solid, thus eliminating the insulating factor of dead air spaces. Remember that the exterior brick, stone, or even plaster, is the outward appearance of your stove. The inside is yet another matter.
